We are yet again at the point of the offseason where photos and videos are circulating of Ben Simmons, ready for a breakout campaign. All the hype says Simmons is supposedly injury-free and ready to return to his 3x all-star self. In an exclusive interview by Marc Spears with Simmons, the former Sixer mentions that if he were to be traded anywhere again, he would choose Philadelphia. This indeed came as a shock to many as this time two years ago, Simmons was hell-bent on never playing another minute for the Sixers again. Simmons calls Philadelphia his second home and, in the same interview, Spears goes on to say: “In time, you learn and grow as people. I don’t have anything bad to say about Philly.” It is very possible that Simmons is just trying to salvage what is left of his reputation around the NBA, but should the Sixers look into bringing Simmons back if he is available? Let’s preface this discussion with the fact that this will not happen, but there is no harm in hypothesizing. Ironically enough, the Sixers are in the same exact situation as they were two years ago, but this time with James Harden. Harden has said time and time again that he wants out of Philadelphia and has even gone as far as saying that he will never play for another organization that Daryl Morey is a part of. For as ugly as the situation got with Simmons, it never went public. This entire off-season has been a PR nightmare, and because of that, they can not afford any more ill-will with the city, but the Sixers, as presently constructed, could use a player like the 2019-2021 Ben Simmons. Simmons is still just 27 years old, and if his injuries really are gone, he still has a long career ahead of him, whether that be with the Nets, the Sixers, or another team. If Simmons can look like even a fraction of the player that he looked like during his time in Philadelphia, he could get his wish of returning after all.
