Andrew Friedman Explains Why Dodgers Are So Good at Revitalizing Players’ Careers

Image The Los Angeles Dodgers have garnered a reputation for maximizing the potential of pitchers over the years. Whether it’s Alex Wood, Tyler Anderson or Evan Phillips, the Dodgers can turn almost anyone into an improved, top pitcher. Even with a relative down year for the Dodgers’ pitchers in 2023, they still have the reputation as one of the best pitching development teams in Major League Baseball. This pitching development has become a key part of the Dodgers’ organization since the arrival of president of baseball operations Andrew Friedman in 2015. Friedman has implemented a comprehensive program that works on improving pitching from analytics to the training in order to get the best possible results from each pitcher. For Friedman, this team process that relies on all the different aspects of their staff and organization has been the key to this success. He spoke to Mike DiGiovanna of the Los Angeles times about his process, and why it works so well in this organization. “It boils down to putting guys in the best position to succeed,” Friedman said. “When we’re looking to acquire a pitcher by free agent or trade, I think our scouts, analysts and pitching coaches work really well together to identify the levers we want to pull to increase the likelihood of success. I think the secret sauce for us is how well our groups work together. The collaboration between our really talented pitching group to our performance group, to our training staff as well as the people who play a role in identifying the talent on the front end. … I think that communication and collaboration is a huge part of why we’ve had success.” via Mike DiGiovanna the Los Angeles Times The Dodgers have revamped their pitching staff with the likes of Yoshinobu Yamamoto and Tyler Glasnow, but they also recently agreed to a deal with left-handed pitcher James Paxton. Paxton is coming off a season in which he had a 4.50 ERA, so he would be a prime candidate to work with the Dodgers’ pitching staff to somewhat resurrect his career at the age of 35.
